The Gaze – Jemima Stehli – Self Exposed 2004
Concept of Gaze – One that deals with how an audience views the people presented.
Feminists can be thought in 3 ways…
-How men look at women
-How women look at themselves
-How women look at other women
Gaze and Feminist Theory – Laura Mulvey coined the term ‘Male Gaze’ 1975
She believes films are made from the perspective of hetrosexual males.
Features of male gaze…
-Camera lingers on curves of female body
-Events which occur due to reaction of males
-Relegates women to objects
After watching ‘She’s so lovely’ music video from Scouting for Girls, I was able to begin a wider understanding of what is meant by the Gaze.
The camera scans the woman’s body, focusing more so on particular features, and then the men’s reactions.
Jonathan Schroeder – ‘ To gaze implies more than to look at – it signifies a psychological relationship of power in which the gazer is superior to the object.’
I believe that films may be able to explain more of what a gaze involves than what an image can.
